Marilyn the Mystery

Sitting back watching the hit television series Mad Men, I have reached the second season now and one of the interesting topics was the death of the superstar Marilyn Monroe. Every woman in the office was crying about her death and suggested suicide. I have since read three articles about her legend and the fandom that is associated with her. It has been decades since her death but there is a fascination with her beauty, her fragility and her position as a fashion and popular culture icon.
What’s the fascination? She is beautiful, but there are many beautiful women in this world who don’t hold such mystery and such rapt attention from fanatical onlookers. Upon closer inspection I have seen her as a dumb poopsie in the past, her role in some like it hot being my only frame of reference for her when I was younger. She has philandered with a married mad, drugged herself and remained this beacon of beauty. Her fragility seems to be a factor, but I feel that a more important factor to her mystery is the mystery itself. It is always more fascinating when someone cannot be pinned down. Opposed to Lady Gaga or Madonna, Marilyn did not need to shock so very much to seek attention. Her existence was more understated, which motivated others to want more. Such a woman was born to cause a ruckus, without even asking for one.
Her subtlety seems to be the key to her beauty and her fragility makes her relatable to every person. The reason that she is the ultimate fashion icon is because she is all smoke and mirrors like fashion itself. It seems that we may never know the whole truth, just the story that was presented.

The Truth is in the Shoes

A couple of days ago I went discount shopping at Value Village. I always tend to find things that I like there, like the time I found Louis Vuitton jeans for twelve dollars, but this time was a little different. I came across vintage Chanel shoes, black with a metallic detail at the toe, and they were so nice! I found these shoes, sadly, in a size six which is half a size too small for my six-and-a-half sized feet. I shoved my feet into them but they could not have been tighter, and I was devastated. The funny thing was after that I was determined to find something, I wasn't leaving until I had redeemed myself against the rare Chanel. I finally found black slingback, T-Strap pumps by Enzo Angiolini. They were a dream, they fit and the sling back didn't cut my feet, and they were so comfy. I regarded this as an overall triumph, I had been defeated by this rare find, but persevered in search of the right fit. This is my message to you, even if the Chanel shoe isn't right, the shoe that fits and feels good will be there, no matter what feet you have!

Spring Things

Spring is about rebirth, being in Canada, the thawing of snow and ice means that I can finally bust out the shorts, take off my coat, wear nice shoes, and feel light and fresh. New fashion in spring is always exciting. My recommendation for shopping is to go with light fabrics like chiffon, silk and cotton blends. These fabrics are more breathable because they aren't man made. I just loaded up on several great sale items from Urban Outfitters, which resemble some of the pieces from the Hermes line for fall, Miu miu, and with small resemblance to the Bottega Veneta line. With great brights, fun accessories and great nudes for spring I would highly recommend it for spring shopping.

New York Fashion week pics up now

New York fashion week fall 2011 is now available to see at the Fashion Magazine website. You can check out some Vera Wang, BCBG, and Micheal Kors looks that were really well made and reflected the casual elegance and class that is associated with this season. There are great neutrals that are all showing up as well, which I think reflect the direction that the fall season is taking.

Bottega Veneta

The new fall RTW line by Tomas Maier Is one of the best lines I have seen for fall. I honestly melted, I've never paid much attention to this brand before however I feel very inspired by it and want to buy everything in the line. I always love to find new pieces and styles so what my advice to you is that you should always look and try to find new pieces and line that you may not have liked before and try to acquaint yourself with as many elements of fashion as you can. The great thing about fashion is that there's always something new, there's always something to inspire you further and keep the love of fashion alive.

Fall 2011 Celine

Loved the new line! There is something very European about the way this line was put together. Although a lot of the models in the show (which you can check out on Vogue.com in the collections section) had godawful horse faces. I don't know why some of these models are selected. The entire fashion industry is so concerned with being original that they will take a lot of models and piece and ideas that are just flat out weird. Anyways, the line was great the use of leather and furs mixed together reminded me of hunting parties that I have seen in movies. I also really liked that the line was sporting the new "midi" length skirt.

I like the lines in this look and the combination of different fabrics. The cut and the combination of the fabrics work well together to make a sleek look
This outfit reminds me of a riding party and that is why it makes me so happy. I love the cinched waist with the belt and the fur combined with leather here for that real English Shooting party vibe.

This look below makes me think of aristocrats in Europe who would just drape themselves in fur, except this look is a much more modern take on it.
This dress is a very understated sexy to me and it too has that nice combination of textures that you can see on the first outfit.

Oscars! Who got it right?

The 2011 Oscars were not the best in the style department. I'm going to start with that because I really don't see a lot of effort to be creative and show real design skill and beauty in the fashion at the Oscars this year. I found some who tried to be creative, looked insane, like Cate Blanchett who showed up in Givenchy couture looking like Spock's mistress. Those other startlets who tried to keep it simple looked either boring, like Michelle Williams in Chanel, or pageant-y like Reese Witherspoon in Giorgio Armani Prive. I love all of these actresses normally, they are usually wearing something beautiful and interesting, and FLATTERING! But I have to say they may have been my biggest dissappointments.

There were a few that wore something that was not bad, however it could have been tweaked in order to make it go that extra mile. Gwyneth Paltrow in Calvin Klein had a great cut, especially for her slender frame, I loved the neckline and the hem at the bottom but I would have changed two things. One I would have had the dress in a fabric without the shine it looked a little Vegas, and second I would have taken that pin off the waistline, it disrupted the sleekness of the dress and with a designer like Calvin Klein I feel reserved to say that jewelery should be minimal.

Second on my list of people who need to fix it to make it fabulous, is Mila Kunis. She did look great and sexy, but I felt that the dress fits more with the description for the Grammy's because it was a lot of skin. I think with such a sexy top to the dress the skirts layers should have had another layer underneath. The line between beautiful dress and beautiful lingerie was crossed and all that she needed was a thin layer of fabric underneath the skirt.

Mila Kunis may have been a little bit of an exhibitionist but she was nothing compared to some of the women who just needed to take care of their boobs. When you don't wear a bra, your boobs look saggy and sometimes just flat out weird. Jennifer Hudson, Camila Alves I am talking to you. Another starlet with breast issues was Penelope Cruz, The dress was too tight and gaudy, and her boobs not only were smooshed into the top of the dress, but attention was brought to them by the Cher-a-licious glitter and shine on the dress.

Finally something good! Sandra Bullock looked stunning the colour on her skin was perfect the neckline was interesting without looking like it was inspired by Star Trek, she looked lovely. In a very similar dress Anne Hathaway the hostess with the mostest looked really quite good in the Valentino dress she was sporting on the crimson carpet.

All I have to say is that if I only really love two gowns out of all of the celebs who attended the Oscars it is a little sad that people wont go out of their way to look great anymore and don't know how to push the envelope int he right way.

New Years Resolution: Learn How To Dress!

1. Go for neutrals! Neutrals are very prevalent this season because it goes along with minimalist styling. Minimalist style has been very popular the past few seasons and seems to continue to be a trend.

2. Classics are always a good option, wearing a button up shirt and a pair of straight-leg, medium to dark wash jeans, and a brown belt will look good on most figures as long as the clothing are the right size.

3. Wear classic accessories as well like the black watch shown below or the classic brown belt.

4. Get a Blazer! These things make everyone look good, and following the neutral trend there are several blazers at TopShop and H&M that are shown below that look great and, they aren't ridiculously expensive.

5. If you want to wear flat shoes, choose either an oxford which is very trendy right now, or just go for the classic ballet flat because it tends to look good with most outfits.

6.If you want to wear high heels choose either a nude platform pump or a brown knee high boot. The reason for this is that these two choices will look good with jeans, skirts, shorts or dress pants. If you have these two pairs of shoes you can look dressed up with any outfit on and not have to worry if your shoes match.

7.Trend to try! If you want to look very "now" try a Missoni inspired knit with some vibrant colours, it may not be the choice for everyone on the planet, however if you are more risky with your fashion and want to try something new, this is a good option.

8. Every girl should have a dress. Something with a v neck and a straight, or more preferably A-line skirt will look good on most figures.

9. Try turquoise! Bright colours are always popular in the spring, but sometimes people can look garish in overly obnoxious colours. Turquoise is a pretty safe bet for most skin tones, because it is a cooler colour it wont clash too much with most people's natural colouring.

10. A messenger bag is a good choice for women who do not know what kind of purse to get. It is both functional and cute and they come at various price points depending on what you are willing to spend. If you choose to purchase this kind of bag I would suggest getting it in brown; so many women wear a lot of black, so their accessories should be a different colour because: a) It will break up the black and make sure that you don't get swallowed in it, and: b) It will warm up your outfit and give you a more complex outfit. Then when people look at you their focus will not be drawn to a vast expanse of black fabrics, which generally does not tend to be that interesting.
